The Importance of STEAM in Early Learning

Children naturally use their curiosity and instincts to explore, experiment, observe, and play. They are constantly exploring the world around them, testing and experimenting and thinking like small scientists - what happens with the LEGO bricks, the paper or the leaves, will they float or sink? What happens if I roll the car down the ramp? What if I use a ball instead? How can I make a chain reaction? Make your train pause, stop, change direction, sound the horn, and more! Taking the familiarity of a train and combining it with the new action bricks, early learners will learn through play about sequencing, looping, conditional coding, and cause and effect by placing the new action bricks within the train’s track. Each action brick creates a specific action allowing for students to test and redesign ways to problem-solve and work together to get their train to its destination.

The Coding Express App (available for for iOS and Android) is a free child-led app featuring 4 fun and educational activity areas, including:

• Journeys: Explore destinations and traffic signs. Learn about the sequencing of events, making predictions, planning and problem solving.

Curriculum
Coding Express includes a Teacher Guide build which contains 8 online lessons: 4 lessons use the physical set and 4 lessons use the digital app. The Coding Express Teacher Guide also includes 8 short online video tutorials to help you make the most of the solution.

The lessons have been developed using science, maths and technology guidelines from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the 21st Century Early Learning framework (P21) and Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework.
